REMEMBERING EUDORAH MOORE

We mourn the loss of Eudorah Moore, one of the most important figures in the history of California design. Mrs. Moore is rightly identified with the California Design shows of the 1960s and 70s for which she perspicaciously oversaw the selection of the most significant contemporary consumer products, crafts and industrial design.

Hindsight facilitates determining which objects are more significant than others, but Mrs. Moore had the rare ability to recognize which ones were significant at the time they were being produced. She was the co-director of the 1962 California Design show and director of the show’s 1965, 1968 and 1971 iterations, all of which were held at the Pasadena Museum of Art (now the Norton Simon Museum), and was director of the 1976 California Design show which was held at the then newly opened Pacific Design Center after the design exhibition was forced out of the Pasadena Museum because, it was said, the museum’s new director didn’t consider design to be art. (Perhaps he was unaware that by that time the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Newark Museum had been presenting design exhibitions for more than three decades.)

Mrs. Moore, who co-authored California Design 1910 with Timothy Andersen and Robert W. Winter, had been the Craft Administrator for the National Endowment for the Arts
and the Design Curator for the Pasadena Museum of Art.

The Museum of California Design is proud to have honored Mrs. Moore in 2003 with its first Henry Award for outstanding contributions to California design.

Mrs. Moore died on April 21, 2013, at the age of 94.
