Presenting the catalog for "Mid-Century Mandarin: The Clay Canvases of Tyrus Wong"
Benefit and
       Silent Auction   
The Museum of California Design will present its first publication, the 40-page
full-color catalog for "Mid-Century Mandarin: The Clay Canvases of Tyrus Wong" at our Fall
benefit and silent auction. A special numbered limited edition with a print of a painting made
expressly for MOCAD by Mr. Wong will be available for sale. The exhibition is currently on view
at Los Angeles’ Craft & Folk Art Museum.

Mr. Wong himself–the renowned artist and Disney Treasure--will be our guest of honor at the
reception, which will be held at the Los Angeles home of Bill Stern on Sunday, September 26,
2004, from 3 to 6 pm
.

Among the enticing objects to be auctioned to benefit the Museum of California’s program of
innovative traveling exhibitions will be the first ceramics painted by Mr. Wong since he left the
Winfield Pottery in 1950. There will be six plates with images of horses and flora and three vases
bearing Mr. Wong’s name in black calligraphy along with his chop in red
.

Silent Auction
The Silent Auction will take place at the Los Angeles home of Bill Stern on September 26.
Bidding at the benefit will open at 3 pm and close at 5:30 pm.
However, e-mail bids will be
accepted from noon, September 19 through noon, September 26
. Bidding will then
recommence at the benefit. Winners not present will either take possession of their purchases
in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles or pay shipping and insurance costs.

A limited number of tickets to the Benefit is available at $50 each.
Tickets will go on sale September 15, 2004 at Noon.

We will accept payments for tickets by check and credit card (Visa/MasterCard)

This 10-1/4" x 14” 32-page rotogravure publication, rich in photographs of the Golden State’s natural and manmade beauty, was used to promote tourism. The August 1929 issue contains picturesque, full-page photos of Santa Barbara's Old Spanish Days festival, dramatic photo of the Hollywood Bowl at night, the Playa Del Rey "Beach of the King" and photo essay on the Beverly Hills home of actress Clara Bow. CALCO (California Clay Products) polychrome, earthenware tile.
12 1/4" x 12 1/4" x 7/8," South Gate, c. 1925.Except for a strip of missing glaze along one edge, remarkable condition. CALCO was founded in 1923 by Rufus Keeler who, in 1926 became the general manager of the Malibu Potteries which he established for May Rindge.
