Sunday, January 25, 2004, is the closing day of our exhibition, "California Pottery: From Missions to Modernism," at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage in Los Angeles. To honor the designers and producers of the California pottery featured in this highly-praised show, we will hold a benefit reception and silent auction at the home of Bill Stern on Saturday, January 24, 2004, from 3 to 6 PM.

Among those expected to be present are Jerome Ackerman (Jenev Design Studio), Rupert Deese (Rupert Deese Stoneware Designs), Jack and Ruth Hirsch (Jaru Art Products), Malcolm Leland (Malcolm Leland Ceramics and Architectural Pottery), Max Lawrence (Architectural Pottery), Barbara Willis, and Tyrus Yu Wong (Winfield Pottery) as well as Cathy Bailey and Robin Petrovic, the new owners of Heath Ceramics, Janek Boniecki of the Bauer Pottery Company, Mike Stephenson of Vessel, author Jack Chipman and Henry C. Keck, designer of the 2003 California Design Award.

A limited number of tickets are available at $75 each.

The Silent Auction will take place at the home of Bill Stern on January 24th. However, mail and e-mail bids for the following lots will be accepted starting January 14, but must be received on or before January 24th at Noon. Include name, mailing address, e-mail address and telephone number of bidder. Winners not present at the Benefit will take possession in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles or pay shipping and insurance costs.

LOT 2. Pair of candleholders designed by Jerome Ackerman for Jenev Design Studio, Los Angeles, 1953. 3-1/2" high x 5" wide x 1-1/2" deep. This limited production pair was made by the designer in porcelain from the original mold in 2003. Original in-mold mark: "JENEV" and hand-incised "Ackerman" and "P." Accompanied by a printed description of Ackerman’s current production with ink signature lower right.

LOT 3. Classic modern teapot designed by Edith Heath in 1947. Stoneware with matte redwood glaze and cane-wrapped copper handle. 6" high x 8" wide x 5" deep. Current production by Heath Ceramics, Sausalito.

LOT 4. Three-piece dining service for eight designed by Edith Heath in 1960. Rim shape with an onyx (slightly metallic, medium shiny black) glaze and exposed clay rim; Twenty-four pieces total: salad plate 8.25"; dinner plate 10.75"; soup bowl (made exclusively for restaurants, not for retail sale) 9" diameter. Current production by Heath Ceramics, Sausalito.

LOT 11. Original January, 1930, issue of “Pictorial California”. This 10-1/4 x 14” 32-page rotogravure publication, rich in photographs of the Golden State’s natural and manmade beauty, was used to promote tourism. The January 1930 issue contains dramatic, full-page nighttime photos of Hollywood Boulevard and Broadway in their heyday and photo essays on the artist Nicholai Fechin and the Malibu home of actress Laura La Plante. Excellent condition. Donated by the Museum of California Design
