Palm Springs Modernism 2007

The Museum of California Design will present "The California Modernism of Architectural Pottery,"an exhibition of the revolutionary modernist products of this groundbreaking California company at Palm Springs Modernism 2007. Whenever you see a white cylindrical planter at an office building, a bank or a gasoline station you are experiencing one of the consequences of a California design revolution: the introduction of large format modernist ceramic vessels by Architectural Pottery.

Palm Springs Modernism 2007 will feature more than seventy-five noted national and international decorative and fine arts dealers presenting all design movements of the 20th Century: Saturday, February 17, 10 to 6 PM ~ Sunday February 18, 12 to 5 PM

Honoring Architectural Pottery:
A company whose designs reshaped modern living in America

The Museum of California Design's 2006 California Design Award will honor Architectural Pottery. This company’s extraordinary contributions to American design are visible whenever you go to a commercial building, a bank, a gasoline station -- and many mid-century modern homes -- and see a large, unadorned white cylindrical planter. Architectural Pottery introduced these and other quintessentially modern shapes to the American built landscape when it was established in 1950. They were in production until 1985.

The impact of Architectural Pottery was felt from the company’s inception: Designs from its first catalog were selected for the New York Museum of Modern Art’s 1951 Good Design Exhibition. Architects, landscape architects and interior designers were the company’s principal customers. For example, Welton Becket Associates, architects of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, specified 200 Architectural Pottery pieces for the building and grounds when the hotel opened in 1957.

The 2006 California Design Award will celebrate the founders of Architectural Pottery, Max Lawrence and his late wife Rita, and the company's designers. Architectural Pottery’s first radical designs were developed in a class taught by LaGardo Tackett and then executed by Tackett, John Follis, Rex Goode and others. In addition to Max Lawrence, awards will be presented to Architectural Pottery designers Raul Coronel, David Cressey, Douglas Deeds and Malcolm Leland and the company's graphic artist Jayme Odgers. The award for the late John Follis, who designed the company’s award-winning logo, will be accepted by his son, Grant Follis.

Frances Anderton, host of 89.9 KCRW host of radio’s DnA: Design and Architecture, will present the awards. Anderton is the Los Angeles Editor for Dwell magazine and a contributor to the New York Times.

The Museum of California Design’s director, Bill Stern, will be the master of ceremonies.

Join us, and our honorees, for hors d’oeuvres and drinks in Bel-Air,California, from 3 to 6 PM on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006. The Silent Auction features vintage items, including original Architectural Pottery, and contemporary goods and services.

A very limited number of tickets to the Benefit are available at $100 each ($65 tax-deductible).
Tickets will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and must be purchased in advance: Valet parking will be provided and the venue is handicapped accessible.

Our Summer 2005 Benefit and Silent Auction
honored designer Charles Hollis Jones.

The Museum of California Design’s Summer Benefit was held on Sunday, June 5, 2005 at one of California’s architectural treasures, Lloyd Wright’s extraordinary Sowden House in Los Angeles’ Los Feliz neighborhood. This landmark 1926 Mayan Revival home was recently refurbished by its current owner Xorin Balbes, whose generosity made it possible for MOCAD's fundraiser to take place there.

Before an admiring crowd museum director Bill Stern presented the museum’s Distinguished Designer Award to Mr. Jones,who is renowned for his innovative Lucite® furniture and accessories. Jones’ work was exhibited in several of the California Design exhibitions held at the Pasadena Museum of Modern Art (now the Norton Simon Museum) in the 1970s, the Palm Springs Desert Museum in 2003 and numerous galleries across the country. In 2004 he received the Pacific Design Center’s "Star of Design Award." His 1968 Wisteria Chair will be exhibited in MOCAD’s next exhibition, "100 Years of the California Chair."
