The Museum of California Design’s 2012 Award Benefit honored several of the designers whose work is included in CALIFORNIA’S DESIGNING WOMEN 1896-1986, our current exhibition at the Autry: Evelyn Ackerman, Marilyn Kay Austin, Renee Firestone, Arline Fisch, April Greiman, Judith Hendler, Gere Kavanaugh, Cher Pendarvis and Deborah Sussman. The Benefit was held on Sunday, September 23, from 2 to 5 PM in Los Angeles’ venerable Hancock Park area. This was a rare opportunity to experience an intact historic mansion from the Roaring 20s – designed by J. Ross Castendyck, the architect of Delores del Rio’s first home -- appropriately appointed with vintage furnishings and artworks.

The Museum’s 2012 Henry Award was presented to the honorees by Frances Anderton who is the host of KCRW’s DnA: Design and Architecture and a regular contributor to the New York Times.

The Henry Award itself is an interpretation in Lucite by Charles Hollis Jones of the Roadside Barricade Light designed in 1967 by Henry Keck for Pasadena-based Keck-Craig, Inc. The Barricade Light, reduced to a circle and an almost square devoid of any unnecessary elements, is a paragon of modern design that was exhibited in California Design Ten at the Pasadena Museum of Art in 1968 and in LACMA’s 2012 exhibition California Design 1930-1965: Living In a Modern Way.

The event schedule included an Award presentation by Ms. Anderton, remarks by each of the designers, a live auction conducted by Peter Loughrey of Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA) and a silent auction.  The ceremony ended with CaliforniaSenator Curren D. Price, Chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on the Arts presenting each of our awardees with a State of California Certificate of Recognition.
We are grateful to DEAN HANSELL for welcoming our guests to his remarkable home and gardens.
And we acknowledge the Participating Sponsorship of:
